Custody: who holds your money

Robinhood Crypto holds app balances. Robinhood Wallet is a separate self-custody app run by Robinhood Non-Custodial, Ltd. (Cayman Islands).

Who backs Robinhood

Incidents

• 2021-11-03: Data security incident (social engineering). An attacker socially engineered a support employee by phone and got a list of ~5 million email addresses, ~2 million full names, and more personal details for ~310 people. Robinhood said no SSNs, bank or debit card numbers were exposed, and it received an extortion demand. source
• 2022-08: NYDFS $30M penalty on Robinhood Crypto. New York's financial regulator fined Robinhood's crypto unit $30M over alleged anti-money-laundering and cybersecurity compliance failures. source
• 2024-05: SEC Wells notice to Robinhood Crypto (closed without action). The SEC sent Robinhood Crypto a Wells notice in May 2024. On 2025-02-21 the SEC Enforcement Division told the unit it had concluded its investigation and did not intend to recommend an enforcement action. source

Real downsides

• The default route's spread includes 0.95% per side that goes to Robinhood (as of June 2026), about 1.9% round trip.
• Robinhood Crypto received integration fees for listing some assets, such as FLOKI, ONDO, ENA, SUI and ZORA.
• The Robinhood Wallet swap fee (0.80% same-chain) is high compared with many DEX aggregators.
• A 2021 social-engineering breach exposed ~5M customer emails, and NYDFS fined the crypto unit $30M in 2022.

Can you use it where you live?

US: some coins can't be traded in New York (e.g. TRUMP, PNUT, POPCAT, MEW, FLOKI) or Texas (USDC, USDG), and exchange routing is unavailable in North Carolina. UK: crypto runs through Bitstamp UK Ltd (FCA-registered, Robinhood-owned). EU: Robinhood Europe app; crypto trading ended in Hungary from 8 Sep 2025. US referral program is US residents only. How to use Robinhood without getting scammed

• Only open robinhood.com — fake lookalike sites and "support" DMs are the most common way people lose funds on any trading venue.
• Never share a seed phrase or private key. No real support agent will ask for one.
• A referral code only changes your fee and who gets a share of it. It never needs your keys.
• Treat every new memecoin as able to go to zero. A legit venue does not make the coins on it safe.
