Freeze authority
Freeze authority is the address allowed to freeze token accounts for a specific token. A frozen account keeps its balance but cannot send, receive or burn that token, so the holder cannot sell. If the freeze authority has been revoked, no account for that token can ever be frozen.
What freezing does
Solana's documentation says a token's mint account stores an optional freeze authority. Freezing a token account keeps the same owner, mint and balance, but stops the account from receiving, transferring or burning tokens until it is thawed. A frozen account can still be closed only if its balance is zero.
Only a mint that still has a freeze authority can freeze accounts. Solana's docs say that once the freeze authority is revoked, accounts for that mint can no longer be frozen. Revoking means setting the authority to None with the Set Authority instruction, which is permanent.
Why traders care
Jupiter's risk documentation lists an enabled freeze authority as a developer control. It means the creator can freeze any token account, preventing the holder from transferring or selling. Jupiter Shield shows a Has Freeze Authority warning on such tokens.
This is one way a Solana token can behave like a honeypot. Buys go through, and the creator can freeze buyers' accounts afterwards so only chosen wallets can sell. GMGN's checks show this as a blacklist flag and say a wallet on it cannot sell.
How to check before buying
Look up the mint address in an explorer and read the freeze authority field, or use the authority indicators on Jupiter, GMGN, RugCheck and similar tools. A revoked freeze authority removes this specific risk. It does not cover a dev dumping supply, liquidity being pulled, or an active mint authority, so check those separately.
If a token you hold shows a frozen account, sending more funds will not unfreeze it. Only the freeze authority can thaw the account.
Where this shows up
- RugCheck — Solana memecoin traders who want a free, quick risk check (authorities, LP locks, insiders, holder concentration) before buying a token.
- Jupiter — Solana traders who want aggregated routing across DEXes with low or zero fees on major and stable pairs.
- GMGN — Multichain memecoin traders who want smart-money tracking and copy trading across a web terminal and Telegram bots.
- Birdeye — Solana-first traders who want a token tracker with a mobile app, and developers who need a metered on-chain data API.
- Phantom — Solana-first users who want one self-custodial app for swaps, cross-chain swaps, Hyperliquid perps and predictions.
- Solflare — Solana-only users who want staking, swaps and Solana-native perps in one self-custodial wallet.
