OKX launched OKX Shield in the United States on 20 October 2026, a program that may reimburse customers when an unauthorised third party takes over their OKX Exchange account and moves assets out. Eligible US customers can receive up to $100,000, VIP 1-3 customers up to $250,000 and VIP 4+ customers up to $500,000, with no subscription or activation fee.
Shield does not switch on automatically. Customers must pass account and device checks and enable a passkey, large-withdrawal protection, web-withdrawal blocking and verification for all supported actions; protection lasts only while those settings stay on. It covers account takeovers through phishing, malware or SIM swaps.
OKX's terms call Shield a voluntary, discretionary goodwill program, not insurance or a deposit guarantee, and say OKX decides each claim. Claims must be filed within 72 hours of the last unauthorised transfer, each person can receive only one approved claim in their lifetime across all OKX entities, and payouts are made in stablecoins. Transfers the customer approved, even after being tricked, trading losses, API-key misuse and funds in OKX Wallet or OKX Pay are excluded.
OKX first offered Shield in the European Economic Area in September 2026, with limits of €100,000, €250,000 and €500,000 by tier.
“OKX Shield (the "Programme") is a voluntary, discretionary goodwill initiative offered by OKX to eligible users. It is not insurance, an investor compensation scheme, a deposit guarantee scheme, nor an unconditional undertaking to reimburse any loss.”
