Cold wallet

A cold wallet keeps your private keys offline, usually on a hardware device, so signing happens away from internet-connected apps. It reduces exposure to online attacks, but you are fully responsible for the device and the recovery phrase.

Hot vs cold

Ethereum.org says physical hardware wallets let you keep crypto offline, and it calls that very secure. Browser extensions, mobile and desktop apps are the connected alternatives, often called hot wallets. They are convenient for trading but live on devices that touch the internet daily.

Why it matters for traders

Ethereum.org also points out that wallet providers do not have custody of your funds: the wallet is a window onto your account, and a recovery phrase is the only way to recover it. That makes the phrase and the device the whole security model. Lose both and the funds are gone, and nobody can reset it for you.

Many traders keep a small balance in a hot wallet for active swaps and the rest offline.

Practical checks

Buy hardware directly from the manufacturer, write the recovery phrase on paper and never type it into a website, and test with a small transfer first. Cold storage does not protect you from approving a malicious transaction, so read what you sign. This is education, not a security guarantee.

Cold wallet trade-offs

Offline keys add friction by design. Each transaction needs the device in hand, and a lost or damaged device is recoverable only through the written phrase. For frequent small swaps the extra steps can be a nuisance, which is why the split between a small active wallet and offline savings is common. Choose the setup you will actually follow consistently, and keep it simple enough that you can recover it under stress.

Common mistakes

People often buy a hardware device and then store the recovery phrase in a photo or cloud note, which defeats the point. Others assume cold storage makes every transaction safe, when the device only protects the keys, not your judgment about what to sign.

Test recovery before you rely on it. Restore a small wallet from the written phrase on a spare device so you know the backup works. Keep firmware updated using the manufacturer's official instructions.
