Custody: who holds your money
OpenSea's terms say it never has custody of your assets. You can connect your own wallet, or sign up with email and get an embedded wallet provided by Privy (a third party). Embedded-wallet keys can be exported for EVM and Solana under Settings, Embedded Wallet.

Incidents
- 2022-02-20: Phishing attack on NFT listings. CEO Devin Finzer said 32 users signed a malicious order payload that let an attacker take their NFTs. The attacker's wallet held about $1.7M in ETH from selling them, and OpenSea said the attack did not come from its website. source

- 2025-07-31: Former product manager's conviction vacated. A US appeals court vacated the 2023 wire fraud and money laundering conviction of former OpenSea product manager Nathaniel Chastain, who had bought NFTs before they were featured on the homepage. source
Real downsides
- The 0.5% swap fee is double Matcha's 0.25% on most pairs, before any provider fees.
- NFT sellers pay 1%, and primary drop mints carry a 10% fee.
- Some products, including stock tokens, are not available in the US or UK.
- Past phishing and email-leak incidents, and the SEA token launch has been postponed with no new date.

OpenSea is a US company (Ozone Networks, Inc.). Its terms (updated 2026-10-20) bar anyone 'located in, ordinarily resident in, or organized under the laws of a U.S.-sanctioned country' and sanctioned persons, and do not name the UK or EU. The mobile launch post says 'Certain products are not available to users in the US, UK and sanctioned jurisdictions', and the help center says stock token trading is not available in the United States. How to use OpenSea without getting scammed
- Only open opensea.io — fake lookalike sites and "support" DMs are the most common way people lose funds on any trading venue.
- Never share a seed phrase or private key. No real support agent will ask for one.
- A referral code only changes your fee and who gets a share of it. It never needs your keys.
- Treat every new memecoin as able to go to zero. A legit venue does not make the coins on it safe.

FAQ
Is OpenSea safe?
OpenSea is self-custody: your funds stay in a wallet you control, so your own key security matters most. We list 4 reported incidents below, so read those before depositing. No platform makes the coins you trade on it safe.
Is OpenSea legit?
OpenSea is the NFT marketplace run by Ozone Networks, live since December 2017 and backed by a16z, Paradigm and Coatue. It never holds your assets. In 2022 users lost NFTs to a phishing attack and a vendor employee leaked email addresses. The SEC closed its NFT investigation in February 2025.
What fees does OpenSea charge?
OpenSea takes 0.5% of each token swap (0.45% with a referral code), plus any swap-provider fees. NFT sellers pay 1%, mints in a primary drop carry a 10% fee, and perps orders add 0.01% on top of Hyperliquid's fees. Gas goes to the network, not OpenSea.
Does the OpenSea referral discount apply to NFTs?
No. The 10% referral discount applies only to OpenSea's fee on token swaps, in the app or on the website. NFT trades get no discount and earn the referrer nothing.
Can I add an OpenSea referral code to an existing account?
No. The referrer is the user whose code was entered when your account was created, in the OpenSea app at email sign-up, and it cannot be changed afterwards.
Has the OpenSea SEA token launched?
No. CEO Devin Finzer postponed the planned March 2026 launch on 16 March 2026, citing market conditions, and OpenSea has not given a new date.
