Custody: who holds your money
Balances sit with Coinbase, the same custodian as the regular Coinbase account. Coinbase says assets are held 1:1 and are never lent without the customer's consent.

Incidents
- 2023-01-04: NYDFS settlement over compliance failures. New York's financial regulator found Coinbase failed to track and report suspicious activity (a backlog of 100,000+ unreviewed monitoring alerts by late 2021). Coinbase agreed to a $50M penalty and to invest a further $50M in its compliance program over two years. source
- 2023-06: SEC lawsuit (later dismissed). The SEC sued Coinbase in June 2023, alleging it operated as an unregistered securities exchange, broker and clearing agency. On 2025-02-27 the SEC filed a stipulation to dismiss the case with prejudice; it said the dismissal did not reflect a position on the merits. source
- 2025-05-14: Customer data breach via bribed support agents. Coinbase disclosed in an SEC 8-K that criminals bribed overseas support staff to copy customer data from support tools (activity began 2024-12-26). The data covered 69,461 customers: names, addresses, emails, phones, masked SSN/bank data, ID images and balances. No passwords, private keys or funds were exposed. Coinbase refused a $20M ransom and estimated $180M-$400M in remediation costs. source
Real downsides
- US entry fees of 0.50% maker and 0.90% taker are high next to many exchanges' base rates.
- Rates for the middle tiers and stablecoin pairs are shown mainly in a signed-in fee page.
- Balances are custodial and the May 2025 Coinbase insider data breach affected 69,461 customers.
- Derivatives and the VIP program are limited by region; VIP is unavailable in the UK.
Can you use it where you live?

| European Union | Available |
Coinbase publishes separate spot entry rates for the US, for the EU and UK, and for other markets such as Brazil and India. Derivatives are offered only to eligible clients and regions: US futures come through Coinbase Financial Markets, and EEA derivatives through Coinbase Financial Services Europe. The Advanced VIP program is not available in the UK. Advanced referral links are not valid for residents of the UK, Turkey, the Philippines or Canada. (source)

How to use Coinbase Advanced without getting scammed
- Only open www.coinbase.com/advanced-trade — fake lookalike sites and "support" DMs are the most common way people lose funds on any trading venue.
- Never share a seed phrase or private key. No real support agent will ask for one.
- A referral code only changes your fee and who gets a share of it. It never needs your keys.
- Treat every new memecoin as able to go to zero. A legit venue does not make the coins on it safe.

FAQ
Is Coinbase Advanced legit?
Coinbase Advanced is part of Coinbase, founded in 2012 and listed on Nasdaq (COIN) since April 2021. It requires identity verification and holds a New York BitLicense. Past incidents include a 2023 NYDFS settlement ($50M penalty), an SEC suit dropped in 2025, and a May 2025 insider data breach with no funds or keys exposed.
What are Coinbase Advanced fees?
Fees are maker and taker rates set by 30-day volume. Since 16 September 2026 the US entry tier is 0.50% maker and 0.90% taker, the EU and UK entry tier is 0.25% and 0.50%, and the first volume tier starts at $10,000. Your current rate shows on the order preview.
Is Coinbase Advanced the same as Coinbase Pro?
Coinbase Advanced is the successor to Coinbase Pro. Coinbase announced in June 2022 that Pro's features would move into Advanced Trade inside the main Coinbase account. Advanced uses the same login and balances as regular Coinbase, so no separate Pro account is needed.
Coinbase vs Coinbase Advanced: which is cheaper?
For active trading, Advanced usually costs less. Regular Coinbase buys add a variable spread plus a fee, while Advanced has no spread and charges a maker or taker percentage. At the US entry tier a market buy costs 0.90%. Coinbase One covers fees only on regular trades, not Advanced orders.
Is there a Coinbase Advanced referral program?
Yes. Invitees get $5, $20 or $50 for trading over $100, $5,000 or $10,000 on Advanced within 14 days. The referrer earns a 30% USDC commission on the invitee's trading fees. Links are not valid for residents of the UK, Turkey, the Philippines or Canada.
